Lights are on but nobody's home.
It appears to be on but no heating. Moderate and gentle use for about 2 years.
This is the worst. I had Frigidaire before for 15 years and never had any issues, the only reason I replaced it was the aesthetics. Wish I kept my old ugly but perfectly well functioning microwave instead of this dead box.

Was so happy with this microwave until it would stop working and kept flashing open/close door. Now it won't work at all!!! Plugged it back in and now nothing works, the display screen won't light up, it's as if there is no power to the microwave. I checked the outlet and the outlet is working fine. Don't know why this happened but it is very upsetting when you bought a $345 microwave that doesn't work at all!!!

We bought this in summer of 2017. It stopped heating a year later. Whirlpool sent someone to fix it & it worked for another 13 months. It's not heating again. Had my old one 13 + years with no issue. This one is a complete dud. The amount it costs to fix it (service call, labor, parts (whirlpool will pay for parts only if it's the exact same problem) is hardly worth it to take a chance of it doing this again in another year. Don't recommend this model.

As many others have stated this microwave has issues with the door. After about 3 years we started getting the door isn't closed error. It is out of warranty but I expected a better quality product. It is sad that we have advanced technology but yet appliances made decades ago still work while new appliances break after a few years.

We bought our first house which came with all brand new whirlpool appliances. Only issue we've had with any of them is the microwave. It will not work as the door is not recognized as closed. Recommend check reviews for this specific model on Home Depot's website as almost every one has the same issue and most happens at the same exact time, 2 years in. From other reviews I already know whirlpool will not stand behind their product as it is out of 1 year warranty even though this is due to product malfunction and no damage whatsoever. There should be some type of quality program or recall. I have no problem with buying a new microwave, but after going through reviews on different websites I will not be buying anymore whirlpool products because I don't plan in doing it every two years.

I bought this microwave just over 2 years ago after reading all the wonderful reviews. It worked great up until recently. It would periodically not work, saying open/close door. Then, it would flicker back on at times. Twice, it actually continued running after you opened the door. That is extremely dangerous! I don't have an extended warranty so now I am stuck with a faulty and dangerous microwave. I will never buy Whirlpool again!

So my wife and I purchased a new whirlpool "stainless steel" microwave. We replaced an older microwave and while all our other appliances are Frigidaire Gallery we were attracted by the look and features of this microwave. Fast forward a few months and we are cleaning our appliances when we find that after cleaning the fridge, dishwasher, and stove with no issues, that the microwave immediately after spraying the handle with cleaner it turned a milky white and blotchy. So now the microwave handle is ruined and after calling customer service they admit that the handles are not made of stainless steel and that the stainless steel they use is not as quality as what is used by the Frigidaire products. Extremely disappointed with this purchase and will NEVER buy another Whirlpool product again.

Manufactured Sept 2016, and issues started with the door latch detection (open / close errors) after just a year. Clearly a known defect. Errors get more frequent over time until the unit is inoperable.

Like so many others our microwave is malfunctioning with this open/close door issue. Started about a year ago and it's finally to the point that it won't work at all. I have someone coming out tomorrow to look at it, but - based on what everyone else says in their one-star reviews - I'm not optimistic.
Spent $3,000 for Whirlpool appliance package July 2016. Dishwasher broke less than a year later. Than this microwave issue started shortly after that. Definitely regretting my choice to buy Whirlpool.

This microwave stopped heating food after two and half years. I paid $85 for a service call to find out the part that needs to be replaced will cost more than a new microwave. They advised me it was not worth the repair. I contacted Whirlpool thinking they would stand behind their product but I was told they would not do anything. I asked if they would give me a credit for a new product but they also said no to that. However, they did tell me I was loyal, how nice. The lack of customer support is more frustrating than a product that does not last.

Our micro started having problems at 6 months. Technician came and said a door switch needed adjustment. At 11 months same thing, only this time they replaced the whole door switch assembly which lasted about 8 months this time. It's now just over 2 years old and we will replace this microwave once we have the money...but NOT with another Whirlpool. We bought the matching Whirlpool oven and I'm kicking myself now. I've read about this same microwave problem more than I care to say. We reset ours by unplugging it and letting it sit for 30 seconds. Then of course we have to reset the clock. Really disappointed in this brand. Model: WMH53520CS-7, Serial: TR 7 01 11637, Manufacture Date: 01/2017.

I hate to dogpile, but I am having the same issue with this microwave giving the "Close Door" error. I've cleaned the contacts and it worked for a couple of days and then failed again. We paid for the upgrade on the microwave when we had our home built. We made it 3 years before it started to fail consistently. Now we're having to replace it and it won't be with a Whirlpool. I will mismatch appliances, but I would rather they work.

Told it's a Door switch issue and both will need to be replaced $200 + service fee. Suggested to just buy a new one. How disappointing. I see this same model (diff serial #s) were recalled previously for fire hazard. Cmon Whirlpool... so disheartening.

I'm very disappointed in the quality of this microwave. I loved it until the warranty expired and three months later it broke. Had a repairman out to look at it and he said the fan broke. For such an expensive microwave that shouldn't happen so fast. I installed it about three months after i bought it so I really only used it for a year and it didn't get heavy use. Its used just for one person (not a big family). And I only use it to heat up water for tea and heat up left overs. I never cook in it. How does whirlpool time it so well that so many of these microwaves break just after the warranty is up? Buyer beware.

I bought this microwave in April 2017, it started malfunctioning in May 2018, right after the warrantee was up. I would get an "open/close door" error message everytime I tried to microwave something, even though the door was closed. Then sometimes it would work fine, it was finicky, and with no pattern, sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. Finally it completely stopped working, i had 3 different repair technicians out and none of them could repair it, saying it would be cheaper to repair the whole thing. I'm very disappointed, these microwaves should certainly last more than a year, especially Whirlpool.

We've had this microwave fro about two years, and in the past year or so we've had nothing but problems with constantly receiving error messages to open/close door when trying to heat food...even thought the door is closed. Sometimes this goes on for several minutes, sometimes for several days. The switch has been repaired 2 times already, and only lasts for a couple of weeks. I bought this two years ago. So far it has needed the same fix 3 times. I will now have to pay 75.00 to get it fixed. The tech who came the fist time said Whirlpool made it that way so you would have to pay to fix it. Cheaper to put in the .50 part then to make a decent microwave. Told us to always cook with the fan on and that would keep it from happening sooner but not prevent it.

Have owned this unit 2yrs years now. As a straight forward microwave it works fine. However, it has been below average with regard to its internal components. It has 2 door switches replaced, 1 under warranty and 1 by myself. Just recently, it gave me an error code F4E4. This indicates a sensor failure. It doesn't tell me which sensor. The whirlpool site doesn't give any help for removal of either sensor identified.
Like the title states "Average Microwave" at best. not sure I'd be willing to recommend to unit to anyone. It's below Kenmore reliability standards.

On possibly the worst day it could happen, it started messing up the day I was hosting Thanksgiving at my house. Like many others have stated, it started having a problem with the microwave not knowing when the door was open or closed. All other functionality of the microwave appears to work (fan and lights on the bottom). I have a video clip of the issue but not on Youtube as the site seems to require.
First I noticed the light did not come on when the door opened but it still let some people heat up their dessert. After the next person tried, started beeping with the Ck Time, Open/Close Door message. I unplugged it for 10 minutes and plugged it back in, same problem. Tried it again 3 hours later and the light randomly turned back on after the door was already open. Since then, the light will randomly still not come on and I still get the Open/Close error randomly as well. It has been working as needed mostly as needed but I fear it will soon completely fail.
I called in yesterday to schedule a service appointment and was told the cost just to come out is now $125 so I'm may cancel as it might not be worth it. I see most other reviewers have had the issue come back multiple times. I purchased this when I moved into my new house in March of 2017 and it is now malfunctioning less than 2 years in. Based on these reviews, I agree there should be some type of recall, extended repair program past the base 12 month warranty, or a possible class action could come of this since these microwaves are cheap enough to toss out every 2 years.
I purchased a gas stove, dishwasher, and refrigerator at the same time all from Lowes that all appear to be doing fine.

Installed microwave January/2017. Last two months it randomly would not turn on when you hit the start button. Something with the door switches I believe. If the light inside did not turn on it would not work when you hit the start button.
Now there is no power to the unit. Completely dead. Replaced fuse which did not resolve the issue.
Totally frustrating. Especially during the holidays. Quality is totally unacceptable.

Would close the door and it would not start, it would tell me to open and close the door. Sometime it would fix itself...now it won't work at all. Expensive clock at this point. Bought this about 1.5 yrs ago. Decided to try an American company after bad experiences. Figured it would be made better and let longer. Very disappointed with Whirlpool.
